From Conversations to Community: The Establishment of the San Antonio Wellness Collective

Ultimately, SAWC is creating opportunities that help San Antonio wellness businesses thrive, build lasting roots, and stay long-term in our city. Because when wellness businesses succeed, San Antonio becomes a healthier, more connected, and more empowered community for everyone.

Three months ago, I launched the San Antonio Wellness Collective with a simple goal: To create a wellness entrepreneur community that would meet up, genuinely connect, and learn from each other to gain real momentum in their business growth.

I didn't have investors. I didn't have a team. I didn't have a marketing budget.

What I did have was a vision, a willingness to show up daily, and a deep belief that wellness entrepreneurs deserved more opportunities to connect and thrive without relying on social media posts and pay-to-play networking mixers.

I also believed in some fundamental truths that I came to realize in my 13+ years as an entrepreneur and 7+ years in academia prior: People need face-to-face connection. We are communal creatures by nature, and we thrive when we learn from each other. Nothing beats learning from the stories we share, the mistakes to be spared, and each person's ability to show up for the other when needed.

I also identified some major problems in the Wellness Business Industry that I see most entrepreneurs struggling with here in San Antonio. Problems that go beyond just needing money to grow our businesses.

Sure, raising capital is an issue for founders and startups. We are all feeling the BURN of dried-up funding, lack of funding resources to properly guide us, and the difficult job market that does not aid in cushioning our life expenses while building.
It is no wonder why most amazing ideas do not make it past the founding stages. I would argue that entrepreneurs actually make it past the three-month mark when they are emotionally tied to it, but the financial burdens and lack of collaborative support within their industries make the 1-year mark nearly impossible to reach. We really do need each other in order to overcome the major hurdles. Whether that be for advice, guidance, resources, referrals, funding, or emotional support.

The major pain points I see more have to do with the lack of attention spans for medium-to-long-form content, the lack of originality in pitches, and misuse of AI in order to grow in the early founder stages. An outrageous number of people rely on AI-generated flyers to generate fluff facts about their businesses and then plaster it all over Facebook (which is arguably the most outdated and least useful way to form strong relationships with other entrepreneurs).

I knew when I started building out my idea it would require me to roll my sleeves up, get out into the real world, and find the confirmations to my theories so I could build out some intentional solutions.

Over the last three months, I've worn more hats than I can count. Founder, event coordinator, marketer, social media manager, website designer, photographer, community builder, partnership coordinator, and sometimes even delivery person.

Six days a week, every week, I traveled all across San Antonio, meeting with wellness entrepreneurs, business owners, practitioners, gym owners, wellness centers, farmers, and social community leaders. Most days, I sat down with three to six businesses, listening to their stories, learning about their challenges, and surveying their experiences.

I was so appreciative of everyone welcoming me, opening up, and sharing about their struggles. They also shared about the hard lessons they learned, what they wish they had while growing, and what they needed most NOW to handle the next phase of their business.

I discovered that while every business was unique, many were facing the same challenges: visibility, audience growth, meaningful partnerships, collaboration opportunities, and access to resources that could help them grow.

What surprised me most wasn't what was missing. It was how many people genuinely wanted to help one another.

Again and again, I met business owners who weren't looking to compete. They were looking to collaborate, partner, and support each other. They were LONELY. OVERWHELMED at times and yet so grateful they had built their own businesses out. That's when I realized I wasn't just building out a Community just wanting frequent, free "meetups". I was building a Wellness Business Ecosystem, with the ability to solve multiple issues by facilitating the connections and growth people wanted so badly.

I also learned these key factors that I now want everyone to know.

  1. The Wellness business niche is BROAD and layered. The wellness industry here in SATX is not just spiritual coaching and healing or farm life. It encompasses so many different services, products, social clubs, non-profit initiatives, medical and dental clinics, cafes, kitchens, private practices, programs, and more! We see and understand so little of what encompasses growing a wellness business in this city, and yet we ALL need the services and products daily.

  2. Pay-to-play networking groups and many of the local Farmers Markets are actually PREDATORY and counterproductive for small business growth. There are many 'popular' networking mixers and weekend markets that only exist to feed the person charging those fees, not the many businesses that opt into them.

  3. EVENTS in the Wellness niche are a HOT MESS in this city. There will be several events in the span of a few days and then none for the rest of the week or even two. No one communicates with each other. Everyone uses AI flyers. No one is authentically connecting. Everyone is misusing the words Community and Wellness in their flyers, only for attendees to show up and feel very unsatisfied or lost by what they opted into.

Highlighting these discoveries are some of the most important "work" I have done in my content and in conversations I have had in person with dozens of Wellness Business owners. The factors are largely agreed upon. I just wonder what anyone is going to do about it on their own. Which is why I cared so much about pointing out the issues and electing myself as the person who will do something.

I wrapped up my first quarter of going out into the wild to learn about Wellness Businesses with some pretty amazing STATS. I had not been counting followers, subscribers, and attendees to my meetups for the sake of marking growth. Every person I met, shook hands with, and hugged helped me get closer to understanding the projects and initiatives needed to bring people together.

As of today, September 1st, I have 140 member signups and 53 Wellness Partners on the record. The SAWC Instagram now has 746 local entrepreneurs, community leaders, and small business owners following along. The TikTok I started just 4 weeks ago? Now it has 1150 local #SATX followers, some of whom have already made it to Wellness Wednesday meetings I hold at LaunchSA in the Central Library of Central San Antonio.

The conversion rate is honestly crazy. People are not opting into a paid offer or promise.

PEOPLE ARE OPTING INTO HUMAN CONNECTION.

The numbers prove I was right and then some. It also gave me the validation I needed to run with my ideas for providing visibility, niche programming, and a voice to members wanting to share their stories.

The final realization that prompted me to continue this work was the NEED to build out a FREE community. I know I am not the first or last person to build a FREE community, with initiatives, tickets, and feature opportunities that have a fee to them and are optional. The thing that matters most to me is TALKING ABOUT WHY.

The WHY behind free for me is not about gaining traction and fans. It is about accessibility. The ability to plug into human connection, collaboration, and partnerships on a ground level that is accessible for Wellness professionals who are actually struggling in multiple ways while building out their business.

Many of us in the Wellness niche are struggling with physical ailments and mental health struggles, autoimmune disorders, and financial struggles to top it all off. The big WHY that got many individuals into building a Wellness business was the need for that service or product, ranging from a personal interest in being healthy all the way to it quite frankly, saving their life. As in life or death.

Wellness professionals are some of the most giving, empathetic, passionate, and emotionally intelligent people I have ever known. The Wellness lifestyle and the reason for starting the business are the same. The ripple effect it has in our city is that wellness services, products, social clubs, and initiatives become vital for the community. The fact that many individuals who love what they do and have a powerful testimony will have to get a second job to supplement, or ultimately shut down their business, means that this city will suffer in the long run from the loss of vital health and wellness businesses.

These are hard pills to swallow. This is why creating a Wellness Business Ecosystem is actually a social impact movement.

Q1 was all about getting out into the wild to find the Community I wish to serve. Q2 is now about serving them with intention and giving back to everyone who has joined together to make SAWC an actual Community.

Once again, I know this quarter I have to roll up my sleeves and dive into the hard work. The part that no one else right now can do for me. I have to brain dump and build out all the visions I have as a founder based on all the knowledge I have gained. It goes way beyond just the information, though. It's about the TRUST I have been given to make a difference that people will be able to measure and feel.

I take it very seriously when I share this journey, documented in Instagram stories and 'founder memos' as I grow SAWC. I want people to know who I am at heart, what the goals are, and how it will help everyone. I know that this next part will require more than just me. It will require the people I have sat with and befriended to show up for the solutions - not just share the problems.

I am doing my part right now to build, market, and then execute the initiatives I chose to focus on for Q2.

I'm currently creating intentional marketing opportunities, business development opportunities, and bringing potential consumers straight to the doors of the businesses with locations around San Antonio. I am intentionally guiding members and Wellness partners to connect in order to be at each other's events, volunteer, and even give each other store placements (which is already happening within the SAWC ecosystem!)

My goal is to build a local network that leans on one another, collaborates often, and is united by a shared desire to make a positive social impact and spread wellness throughout San Antonio.

The quarterly initiatives I have mapped out are designed to accomplish these goals while creating meaningful opportunities for businesses, community members, and partners to connect, collaborate, and grow together.

The SAWC Wellness Crawl

A three-month-long series of guided field trips designed to introduce the community to wellness businesses throughout San Antonio. From September through November, we'll visit wellness centers, gyms, studios, clinics, cafés, farms, storefronts, and other wellness-focused businesses across the city. Each experience is designed to go beyond simply showing up—we want attendees to truly engage with the space, learn the story behind the business, meet the people creating impact, and experience wellness firsthand.

Participants will receive an interactive scavenger-hunt-style guide that encourages them to explore each location, ask questions, complete activities, and share their experiences. Many participating businesses are providing demonstrations, educational workshops, tours, free classes, or unique wellness experiences for attendees.

The Wellness Crawl was created to help wellness-minded and wellness-niche entrepreneurs in San Antonio discover local Wellness businesses, while providing meaningful visibility and support for the businesses working hard to serve our community. Rather than relying solely on social media, we're creating real-world experiences that foster relationships, education, and lasting connections. ALL dates, times, and tickets (free or paid) will be listed on the San Antonio Wellness Collective Eventbrite page, starting September 7th, 2026.

Wellness Sober Raves

These events are designed to bring people together through music, movement, community, and fun—without alcohol or nightlife culture. Imagine a high-energy evening featuring DJs, wellness vendors, mocktails, interactive activities, and an atmosphere centered around connection, healing, and self-expression. BONUS, you party from 3pm to 7pm and are in bed by 9pm.

The vision is to create a space where people can dance, move their bodies, make new friends, support local wellness businesses, and experience joy in a way that aligns with a wellness-focused lifestyle. These events are intentionally designed to be accessible, uplifting, and community-centered.

At its core, the Sober Rave Series reflects a larger belief that wellness should be engaging, social, and fun. We're creating experiences that remind people they don't need alcohol to celebrate, connect, or have an incredible night out in San Antonio.

By the end of Q2, I will be finalizing these two initiatives to soft launch:

The San Antonio Wellness Network App

A Wellness Business Digital Ecosystem: A directory for local events being planned (to seek partners, collaboration, sponsors, etc), a directory of members and partners, community perks, an interactive map, and multiple ways to participate in wellness business collaborations.

The SAWC Zine

A quarterly publication that highlights community initiatives, features amazing people throughout San Antonio, showcases wellness products and services, and intentionally connects readers to valuable wellness resources.

Ultimately, SAWC is creating opportunities that help San Antonio wellness businesses thrive, build lasting roots, and stay long-term in our city. Because when wellness businesses succeed, San Antonio becomes a healthier, more connected, and more empowered community for everyone.

These initiatives are designed to create meaningful experiences, increase visibility for local wellness businesses, encourage collaboration, and connect San Antonio residents with the incredible wellness resources available throughout our city.

Meanwhile, I will sleep...eventually. Perhaps when the magazine is printed in my hands, the app project is fully funded and functional, and the results of our efforts lead to amazing results out in the Community. \

My biggest challenge now: Finding funding for Social Impact initiatives in San Antonio, Texas, and some powerful contributors to back up the amazing initiatives SAWC can provide to this Community by supporting Wellness Entrepreneurs.
